About this work

This image of Theobald Wolfe Tone in the uniform of a French officer is a lithograph of about 1800 by J. J. Goggins, made after a copy by Tone's wife Catherine Sampson Tone, itself after an unidentified original. Tone held a commission as chef de brigade in the French army and was captured in that uniform after the naval action off Lough Swilly in October 1798. What the National Gallery of Ireland holds is the lithograph, image 53 × 42 cm, catalogued as Wolfe Tone (1763–1798), United Irishman, in French Uniform (NGI.10433). This print is an open edition, made to order and shipped worldwide.
