France, 1884. The River Loing. Two women pause from their work to talk beneath a cherry tree. Lavery was twenty-eight years old and about to change everything.
Under the Cherry Tree — formally titled On the Loing, An Afternoon Chat — was the painting that announced Lavery as a serious force. Painted in Grez-sur-Loing during his formative years in France, it shows the direct influence of the French Naturalists: soft dappled light, a quiet domestic moment, impasto brushwork that gives the scene texture and warmth. Critics celebrated its luminous air and honest observation. It launched him.
This is the painting he made before he became famous. Which is often where the best work lives.
Sir John Lavery (1856–1941) was born in Belfast, trained in Glasgow and Paris, and became one of the most celebrated painters of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. His work is held in the National Gallery of Ireland, the Tate, and major collections worldwide.
