Turlough O'Carolan was blind from smallpox by age eighteen and went on to compose over 200 tunes still played in traditional sessions today — often considered the last of Ireland's great harper-composers.

About this work

This portrait of the harper Turlough O'Carolan (1670–1738) is an engraving of 1822 by John Martyn, after a painting by the Irish portraitist Francis Bindon (1690–1765), who knew him. O'Carolan was blinded by smallpox at eighteen, took up the harp, and spent forty-odd years travelling Ireland on horseback composing for the households that kept him; some two hundred of his tunes survive. What the National Gallery of Ireland holds is the print, not Bindon's original painting: it is a line and stipple engraving, plate 28.6 × 21 cm, catalogued as Carolan, the Celebrated Irish Bard (NGI.10279). This print is an open edition, made to order and shipped worldwide.
