Made in 1917, The Song of the Mad Prince is a miniature stained-glass panel inspired by Walter de la Mare's poem of the same name. Clarke plated and acided layers of coloured glass to reach its jewel-like blues and rubies, and the panel was made for his friend and patron Thomas Bodkin, later Director of the National Gallery of Ireland.

Harry Clarke (1889-1931) was the outstanding figure of the Irish Arts and Crafts movement, a stained-glass artist and illustrator whose dark, intricate imagination shaped Irish decorative art. The original panel is held in the National Gallery of Ireland.

About this work

The Song of the Mad Prince was made by the Irish stained-glass artist Harry Clarke (1889–1931) in 1917. It shows a prince in Elizabethan dress — white ruff, patterned robe of dark blue and gold — standing before his parents against a ground of red, gold, green and blue ornament, after Walter de la Mare's poem of the same name. Clarke built the colour by acid-etching flashed glass and plating blue over ruby, which is where the depth comes from. It was commissioned by Thomas Bodkin, later Director of the National Gallery of Ireland. The original is a miniature stained-glass panel, 34.3 × 17.7 cm, set in a purpose-made cabinet, and is held by the National Gallery of Ireland (NGI.12074), purchased in 1987. This canvas print is an open edition, made to order and shipped worldwide.
