Tangier, early 1900s. Two riders move through a Moorish garden, their horses picking their way past whitewashed walls and dappled foliage. Lavery was watching.

The Morning Ride captures a moment of quiet elegance in the city that drew Lavery back again and again. He had been coming to Tangier since 1903 and each visit produced work of increasing confidence and lyrical ease. Here, horse and rider move through filtered light with the unhurried grace of people who know exactly where they are going and are in no hurry to get there.

It hangs in the National Gallery of Ireland. It is one of his finest Moroccan works.

Sir John Lavery (1856–1941) was born in Belfast, trained in Glasgow and Paris, and became one of the most celebrated painters of his era. His work is held in the National Gallery of Ireland, the Tate, and major collections worldwide.
