The original hangs in the National Gallery of Ireland. James Humbert Craig's view of Leenane harbour — where the Killary fjord meets the Connemara mountains — is one of the defining images of the Irish West, painted when this coastline was still truly remote.
Craig (1877–1944) was a Belfast-born painter who returned to Connemara year after year, drawn by its moody Atlantic light. He became one of Ireland's most collected landscape painters, and this harbour scene is among his finest works.
About this work
The Harbour, Leenane was painted by the Irish artist James Humbert Craig (1877–1944), who was born in Belfast and returned to Connemara year after year for its Atlantic light. It shows the harbour at Leenaun, the village at the head of Killary Harbour on the Galway–Mayo border. The National Gallery of Ireland records no date for the picture, so none is given here. The original is oil on board, 31 × 43 cm, signed lower left, and hangs in the National Gallery of Ireland (NGI.4696), purchased in 2001. This print is an open edition, made to order and shipped worldwide.
