The Garlanded Girl - Sir John Lavery
Signed and dated 1896, The Garlanded Girl is a quietly Whistlerian study of a young woman with a flower-wound staff - perhaps a vestal figure of spring - painted in swift, linear strokes that give her a delicate, almost musical grace. The sitter's identity and the picture's exact occasion remain a mystery, part of the work's lingering appeal.
Sir John Lavery (1856-1941), born in Belfast, was one of the most celebrated painters of his generation. He trained in Glasgow and Paris, made his name with society portraits and luminous outdoor scenes, served as an official artist during the First World War, and was knighted and elected to the Royal Academy. His paintings are held today in major public collections including the Ulster Museum, the National Gallery of Ireland and Tate.
