Signed and dated 1893 and worked up over 1890 to 1893, The Croquet Party - also known simply as Croquet, or Croquet, A Portrait Group - is one of the ambitious open-air group pictures of Lavery's Glasgow School years. Figures in pale summer dress pause over a game on a sunlit lawn, the scene built from loose, impressionistic brushwork and sweeping strokes of green. It was shown at the Grafton Galleries in London in 1894 and at the Glasgow International Exhibition of 1901.
Sir John Lavery (1856-1941), born in Belfast, was one of the most celebrated painters of his generation. He trained in Glasgow and Paris, made his name with society portraits and luminous outdoor scenes, served as an official artist during the First World War, and was knighted and elected to the Royal Academy. His paintings are held today in major public collections including the Ulster Museum, the National Gallery of Ireland and Tate.
