Dating from the second half of the 1930s, Powerscourt Waterfall is one of Jellett's studies of flowing water, made after the exhibition of Chinese art she saw in London in 1935 reshaped her approach to landscape. The original captures the cascade in fluid, semi-abstract planes.
Mainie Jellett (1897-1944) was a pioneer of Irish modernism. After studying in London and then in Paris under André Lhote and Albert Gleizes, she introduced Cubism and pure abstraction to Ireland, exhibited some of the first abstract paintings seen in the country, and helped found the Irish Exhibition of Living Art. The original is held in the National Gallery of Ireland.
