This map dates to the year of the Second Home Rule Bill — the closest Ireland had come at that point to legislative self-government, defeated in the House of Lords after passing the Commons.

About this work

The Home Rule Map of Ireland was drawn by Jas. Ballance and published by Geo. H. Walker & Co. of Boston in 1893, for Irish readers in the United States. Around a political map of the counties it prints the full text of the Home Rule Bill, portraits and statements from William Gladstone, Charles Stewart Parnell and Robert Emmet, notes on Irish geography, and a seat-by-seat breakdown of the 1892 general election. 1893 was the year of the Second Home Rule Bill: Gladstone carried it through the House of Commons on 1 September by 301 votes to 267, and the House of Lords threw it out a week later by 419 to 41. Original copies are held by the Library of Congress and the Boston Public Library. This print is an open edition, made to order and shipped worldwide.
