Tangier at twilight. A Moorish rooftop. North African light doing things that Northern European light simply cannot do.
Evening, Tangier captures a woman on a rooftop terrace, bathed in the golden warmth of a Mediterranean dusk. Exhibited in 1908, it was painted during the years Lavery spent returning to Morocco — drawn back repeatedly by the quality of the light, the colours, the sense of a world operating by entirely different rules. He painted what he saw with the clarity of someone who had never stopped being surprised by it.
The result is luminous, intimate, and completely alive.
Sir John Lavery (1856–1941) was born in Belfast, trained in Glasgow and Paris, and became one of the most celebrated painters of his era. His work is held in the National Gallery of Ireland, the Tate, and major collections worldwide.
