London, 1910. The lido is full. Bodies move through light and water while the city holds its breath for summer.
Chiswick Baths captures the easy pleasure of an Edwardian afternoon — figures at rest, at play, absorbed in the rare luxury of warmth and leisure. Lavery painted this during his London years, when he moved effortlessly between society portraiture and these quieter, more intimate observations of everyday life. The same eye that painted kings and statesmen found equal dignity in bathers and afternoon light.
It is a painting about stillness inside movement. About the particular happiness of a summer day that feels like it will last forever.
Sir John Lavery (1856–1941) was born in Belfast, trained in Glasgow and Paris, and became one of the most celebrated painters of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. His work is held in the National Gallery of Ireland, the Tate, and major collections worldwide.
