Mainie Jellett's Achill Horses (1941) as an archival print — horses, sea and Atlantic sky resolved into rhythm and colour, one of her best-known late works.

Held by the National Gallery of Ireland, it turns the landscape of Achill Island into ordered, expressive motion: repeated curves and fragmented forms carrying real movement, recognisably Irish and unmistakably modern.

Mainie Jellett (1897–1944), born in Dublin, pioneered abstract art in Ireland before developing the figurative, Cubist-influenced style — shaped in part by her interest in Chinese art — that produced this.

A green-and-blue statement above a sofa, sideboard or fireplace, and a striking gift for anyone who loves the west of Ireland.

About this work

Achill Horses was painted by the Irish artist Mainie Jellett (1897–1944) in 1941. It is a semi-abstract composition of horses, the animals broken into overlapping geometric planes in the cubist manner she brought back from Paris — recognisably the west of Ireland, and unmistakably modern. The original is oil on canvas, 61 × 92 cm, signed and dated on the reverse, and hangs in the National Gallery of Ireland (NGI.4320), bequeathed by Miss R. Kirkpatrick in 1978. Note that Jellett painted more than one picture of this name: a separate Achill Horses dated 1938 is in private hands. This print is an open edition, made to order and shipped worldwide.

Hangs well with

Gleizes taught Jellett a procedure rather than a style: translate a shape, rotate it, repeat. Each of these is that procedure run again.
