Morocco, 1919. Lavery's last journey south. The ochre city spreading out beneath the Atlas Mountains like something from a dream he did not want to wake from.
A View of Fez captures the ancient city in Lavery's signature soft impressionist light — rooftops and minarets dissolving into warm haze, colour and atmosphere blending into each other with the easy confidence of an artist completely at home in his subject. He had been coming to Morocco since 1903 and each visit produced work of increasing lyrical freedom. This painting from his final Moroccan journey is among the most relaxed and assured of his career.
It is a painting about the way a city looks when you have loved it long enough to stop trying to describe it.
Sir John Lavery (1856–1941) was born in Belfast, trained in Glasgow and Paris, and became one of the most celebrated painters of his era. His work is held in the National Gallery of Ireland, the Tate, and major collections worldwide.
