Romanticism reached Irish painting as weather — vast skies, small figures, and landscape treated as something that happens to you rather than something you look at.

Francis Danby was born in County Wexford in 1793 and became one of the leading British painters of the Romantic period, ranked in his day beside John Martin and Turner. His apocalyptic canvases suited the Byronic taste of the 1820s exactly; The Opening of the Sixth Seal took a 200-guinea prize at the British Institution in 1828. Alongside him sit James Arthur O'Connor's wooded glens and storm light, and George Barret's earlier, calmer view of the same country.
