Collection: Cubist
In 1921 Mainie Jellett and Evie Hone left Dublin for Paris, worked under André Lhote and then Albert Gleizes, and came home with cubism.
Jellett showed two cubist paintings at the Dublin Painters' Exhibition in 1923. One of them, Decoration, is among the first abstract paintings ever exhibited in Ireland. The reception was not warm: the Irish Times printed a photograph of the work alongside its critic's verdict — "to me they presented an insoluble puzzle".
She kept going for another twenty years. Jellett died in 1944, at forty-six, having spent her career arguing in public for a way of seeing that Ireland took decades to accept.
Every print is produced on 250gsm archival matte paper with pigment inks, framed in solid wood or unframed. Made to order, free worldwide shipping.
